This is not a breaking news, but on the highly active, bimetallic ORR catalysts this is somehow unexpected! Combining STEM, XRD and electrochemical characterization we were able to show that not only the d-band shifts and surface strain are the important parameters of active catalysts. The amount of defects on the catalysts surface plays a decisive role in the activity. Tailoring the surface defect density can go long way in order to design better ORR catalysts!
